At Over the Rainbow we divide our groups by stage of development (both physical and cognitive) rather than by age. On average a child will join this group at 15 months and remain until almost 2 years old. Again the staffing ratio is maintained at 1:3. A whole new world of adventure, discovery and exploration has opened up for these infants now they can walk and investigate without help. Much of the equipment and materials, therefore, are stored within the child’s reach and are consistently in the same place, which becomes familiar to them as they move about and explore, promoting their creative and problem solving abilities through first hand experiences.
Each day these infants also spend time in a messy-play room where they are given the opportunity to play with materials such as sand, water, paints, soil, shavings and many other types of sensory materials which stimulate their senses and creativity. Patio doors offer direct access to a soft-surfaced enclosed playground where they are free to ride trikes, tractors etc and explore nature.
